Friday has once again come around and both Bijou & Boheme and Heirloom & Knot are thrilled to share with you our latest instalment in our ongoing Art Fair Fridays series where we bring you weekly design inspiration and exclusive interviews with the talented artists that inspire our creativity on a daily basis.
This week we spent some time getting to know more about the muralist, designer, photographer and director Jimmy Marble. One look at this artist’s portfolio and you quickly recognize his love for storytelling…each image feels like a whimsical narrative that evokes a sense of mood and place. Jimmy has an incredible way of taking a commercial muse and making the images he creates feel both editorial and experimental.
How long would you say you have been a professional artist? Almost six years.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received about your art ? I’ve gotten so much great advice over the years from lots of people. My favorite that I always return to is that the extra mile is always the loneliest. Being able to visualize effort like that really had a lasting impact. I always try to find that extra mile in every project and take my work a little further so it’s that much more unique.
How would you describe your creative process? My process is a good blend of very planned and very spontaneous. I like to have everything be figured out before I get to set, that way once I’m on set I can relax and enjoy myself and improvise and see what we can discover.
What is your favourite medium to work in? I just directed a short film last weekend (first non-client based video in five years!), and completely forgot how much I love directing, so I’m going to go with that. I want to put myself in more positions to be directing narrative work over the next few years. There’s such a buzz to it that’s so different than other mediums.
What has been your biggest career highlight to date? Wow I’m not sure if I have one. Every project feels like a miracle at the end of it to be honest. I feel really lucky that I get hired by the people I do to be creative in the way I want to be.
What makes you excited about creating? I like that there’s always something new to do. There is always a new idea to investigate, new characters to create, new materials to experiment with. I am pretty future focused, so the feeling I get inside just knowing that possibility exists is very, very exciting.
Where do you find your greatest creative inspiration? My friends for sure. I am friends with some super talented people who are always hustling, and always making beautiful things. The energy they create makes me want to work 10 times harder every day.
What do you think sets your work apart from other designers? I have never really thought about what makes my work different than other people’s. In college I studied creative writing and art history, so my two main focuses were storytelling and aesthetics. So maybe my desire to infuse story into my art makes my work stand apart. But also just me being me makes my art stand apart. I have real strong opinions about taste and aesthetics that are unique to me, and I make sure I always stay true to myself no matter if it’s a personal project or with a client.

…….
Photographs with people in them are and always have been my favourite and I’m always somewhat suprised when clients of mine seem aprehensive about having strangers on their walls…9 times out of 10, I’d rather a good face than just about anything plastered on mine. When going through Jimmy Marble’s portfolio, what strikes me most is how elaborately playful the story he tells in each of his images is. I love that his works feel edgy but still fun and irreverant…and pretty for that matter. They’re visually so dynamic and would make for such a bold statement in any installation.
Here are my top 5 at the moment…
xx
